Shortly after the corona virus hit Front Porch Sessions seemed to be the only way photographers could get creative and actually get some work done (shooting with a long lens in general). At first when I saw it circulating on social media I thought the idea was really cool but being in my third trimester I didn’t give it a second thought. I really enjoyed seeing some of the sessions and seeing how certain photographers stretched their creativity, like shooting through the window or playing with framing through fences. There were so many good sessions I was totally in awe! Totally inspired.
I knew then that I wanted to at least document a few families during these uncertain times. Really, a huge part of me wished to be out documenting events happening all around but all in all I knew it was impossible with the state I was in–being pregnant. Having had to stay home for almost two months really played with my emotions, said no one ever. Not being able to go places really does get to you. Then I thought about the families that were stuck at home trying to entertain their kids and still keep their sanity. It’s tough when the mundane day to day activities settle in.
So I decided it would be really cool and totally doable to have families that were interested in documenting their quarantine time go ahead and donate to any food drive/charity of their choice in exchange for a fifteen minute ‘front porch/step session’. I made sure to emphasize that I would be shooting at a distance so everyone would feel safe. Having a photo session to look forward to not only allowed families to help the community out, it would also give them something memorable to look back on when they tell their tale of how they handled the corona virus pandemic. Offering the sessions also allowed me to give back to the community even if it was a tiny gesture. It was a great turn out with a small handful of families taking photos and a few others that actually donated to the cause! And here are some of the photos of the amazing families I had the honor of documenting.
Always better together
